Verdict

Composer is the easiest way we've tested to go from "I have a strategy idea" to real-money automated execution. That convenience, not backtesting rigor, is the product. You describe a rules-based strategy in plain English or drag together a logic tree, backtest it instantly against bundled adjusted daily data for free, then deploy it live with one click because Composer is the brokerage (Composer Securities LLC, executing through Alpaca and clearing through Apex). Since June 2026 it operates as "Composer by SoFi," which resolves the startup-longevity question that used to hang over it.

As a backtesting engine, though, it is the shallowest tool in our ranking's mid-field. Simulations run exclusively on daily adjusted closing prices, with a default 1 basis point slippage assumption. Composer's own docs concede that those closes "don't represent real quotes from any point during the trading day." There is no intraday data, no walk-forward analysis and no optimization framework, while the community leaderboard of eye-watering hypothetical CAGRs is an overfitting machine. Live executions happen in a trade window using real-time quotes, so divergence from the backtest is structural; users report exactly that on low-volume ETFs.

Score it for what it is. At 6.2 overall, this is a superb automation product wrapped around a basic backtester. Retail investors running monthly ETF rotations will love it; anyone validating strategies seriously should test elsewhere (QuantConnect, VectorBT) and only then consider Composer as an execution venue.

Pros

  • +Genuinely free unlimited backtesting on bundled, corporate-action-adjusted data. No data fees, ever
  • +Fastest idea-to-live pipeline in the category: it is its own brokerage, so one click deploys a backtested strategy to real money, including IRAs
  • +AI natural-language strategy builder plus a large community library of copyable 'symphonies'
  • +Backtests model regulatory fees and adjustable slippage (1 bp default) rather than ignoring costs
  • +SoFi acquisition (June 2026) adds balance-sheet stability to a former venture-backed startup
  • +Crypto and options-selling (covered calls, cash-secured puts) added alongside stocks/ETFs

Cons

  • Backtests use daily adjusted closes only: no intraday data, no tick/minute resolution, and closes that 'don't represent real quotes from any point during the trading day'
  • Live results can diverge from backtests: decisions use real-time quotes in a trade window while backtests use closes; users report slippage on low-volume ETFs
  • One scheduled rebalance per day, which makes intraday strategies impossible to run
  • No walk-forward testing, optimization, or Monte Carlo tooling; leaderboard of curve-fit community symphonies actively invites overfitting
  • Closed ecosystem: US-only, must use Composer's brokerage, no exporting strategies to your own broker or custom code
  • Small, mixed Trustpilot base (~27 reviews, no aggregate score) including withdrawal-delay and support complaints; affiliate/partner terms currently in limbo post-acquisition

Composer was acquired by SoFi in June 2026 and is now branded 'Composer by SoFi'. The pricing page headline shows $32/mo (annual billing at $384/yr); the help center confirms $40/mo on month-to-month billing. Backtesting is genuinely free: the Trading Pass is only required to deploy strategies live. FINRA/SEC regulatory fees are passed through on the sale of securities. A referral program grants a stacking 25% lifetime Trading Pass discount per referred subscriber (4 referrals = free). What it is

Composer is a no-code automated trading platform and SEC-registered broker-dealer, acquired by SoFi in June 2026 and rebranded "Composer by SoFi." Strategies, called symphonies, are built in a visual logic-tree editor or generated by an AI assistant from natural-language prompts, then backtested and deployed to live automated trading inside the same app. Unlike TradingView or TrendSpider, Composer is not a charting or signals layer that hands orders to your broker: it is the brokerage. Composer Securities LLC executes through Alpaca Securities with clearing at Apex Clearing, and supports taxable accounts plus Roth, Traditional, and Rollover IRAs.

The platform covers US stocks and ETFs, crypto in eligible states (via Alpaca Crypto custody), and, since December 2025, options selling in the form of covered calls and cash-secured puts. A community library of thousands of shared symphonies lets you copy, edit, and redeploy other users' strategies. An API and MCP integration (the October 2025 "Trade With AI" release) let LLMs build, backtest, and execute strategies programmatically, which makes Composer one of the more genuinely AI-native products in this comparison. Access is web and iOS. There is no desktop software.

Backtesting engine & accuracy

Composer's backtester is instant, unlimited and free. It is also methodologically thin. Per the official docs, simulations for stocks and ETFs use daily adjusted closing prices, adjusted for splits and dividends, and Composer explicitly warns these "don't represent real quotes from any point during the trading day." Strategy conditions can be evaluated daily, weekly, or monthly; there is no minute, hourly, or tick simulation, and no way to model intraday entries.

On the cost side it is better than many retail tools. Backtests deduct SEC fees ($27.80 per $1M sold), FINRA CAT and TAF fees, and apply a default slippage of 1 basis point, adjustable to stress different conditions. The Trading Pass fee itself can optionally be included.

The structural accuracy gap sits between simulation and execution. Live symphonies make decisions during a daily trading window using real-time quotes, so a strategy can legitimately take different trades than its backtest suggested. Composer documents this, and Trustpilot reviewers note visible slippage on low-volume ETFs. There is no walk-forward testing, out-of-sample splitting, or Monte Carlo analysis, and the community's hypothetical-return leaderboards make curve-fitting the path of least resistance. Treat backtests here as sanity checks, not validation.

Data

Data is Composer's quiet strength and its hard ceiling at once. Everything is bundled: split- and dividend-adjusted daily history for US stocks and ETFs, plus crypto price history, at zero cost even on the free tier. There are no exchange fees, no data subscriptions and nothing to configure, which is a real advantage over AmiBroker or NinjaTrader, where sourcing clean adjusted data is its own project.

Now the ceiling. Resolution is daily closes, full stop. There is no intraday data at any tier, and Composer does not publish an official statement of historical depth. In practice, backtest start dates are bounded by each ticker's or ETF's inception, and we could not verify a documented survivorship-bias policy for delisted symbols, which matters for stock-picking strategies. You cannot import your own data, alternative datasets, or fundamentals beyond what the editor's built-in indicators expose (price, moving averages, RSI, drawdown, volatility, and similar).

For the platform's core use case, tactical allocation across liquid ETFs on daily-or-slower schedules, the bundled data is clean and entirely adequate. For anything requiring intraday granularity, custom datasets, or delisting-aware universes, it is disqualifying.

Pricing breakdown

Composer's pricing is simple and, for backtesters, unusually generous. The free tier includes unlimited strategy building and backtesting, AI strategy generation, API access, and strategy sharing. You pay only when you want live automated execution.

The Trading Pass costs $40/month billed monthly, or $384/year (≈$32/month, a 20% discount), and unlocks fully automated live trading, portfolio metrics, strategy analytics, and retirement accounts. A 14-day free trial applies. Note that the pricing page leads with the $32/mo annual figure; the $40 monthly rate is confirmed in the help center. FINRA/SEC regulatory fees are passed through on sells, fractions of a cent per share in practice. A Business tier with API access, real-time data management, and mark-to-market accounting is custom-priced.

The referral program can eliminate the fee entirely: each referred friend who buys a Trading Pass grants a stacking 25% lifetime discount, so four referrals make it free. Against alternatives, $384/year compares to TradingView Premium (~$600/yr) plus a broker integration, or QuantConnect's ~$60/mo live node. That is competitive if automation is what you're buying, expensive if you only backtest, which is free anyway.

Who it's for

Composer fits a specific profile: US-based retail investors who want systematic, hands-off strategies (momentum ETF rotation, risk-on/risk-off switches, leveraged-ETF hedging, tactical asset allocation) running on autopilot at daily or slower cadence, in taxable accounts or IRAs, without writing a line of code. For that user it is arguably the best product on the market, and the free tier is an excellent no-risk sandbox for learning systematic-investing concepts.

It is the wrong tool for intraday traders (one daily trade window, daily data), for anyone outside the US (Composer Securities is US-only), for coders who want custom logic, custom data, or their own broker (closed ecosystem, no export path), and for anyone whose priority is statistically rigorous validation (no walk-forward, no out-of-sample tooling, daily closes only).

If you're evaluating alternatives: TradingView or TrendSpider for chart-driven strategy testing with broker flexibility; QuantConnect for institutional-grade multi-asset backtesting with code; Trade Ideas if AI-generated equity signals rather than automation is the draw. There is also a defensible hybrid workflow. Validate a strategy properly on QuantConnect or VectorBT, then use Composer purely as the cheapest no-ops execution layer for the daily-rebalance version.

Frequently asked questions

Is Composer free?+

Partly. Building strategies, AI generation, and unlimited backtesting are free with no subscription. Live automated trading requires the Trading Pass: $40/month billed monthly or $384/year (~$32/month), with a 14-day free trial.

How accurate is Composer's backtesting?+

Adequate for daily-rebalanced strategies, not for anything faster. Backtests use daily adjusted closing prices only, with a default 1 bp slippage plus regulatory fees, and Composer's docs state that those closes don't represent real intraday quotes. Live trading uses real-time quotes in a daily trade window, so live results can and do diverge from backtests, especially on low-volume ETFs.

Is Composer legit and safe?+

Composer Securities LLC is an SEC-registered broker-dealer, and the company was acquired by SoFi (NASDAQ: SOFI) in June 2026. Trades execute through Alpaca Securities with clearing at Apex Clearing. Standard investment risk applies, and its small Trustpilot base includes several withdrawal-delay complaints.

Does Composer support options and crypto?+

Yes, with limits. Crypto trading is available in eligible US states via Alpaca Crypto custody. Options support arrived in December 2025 and covers selling covered calls and cash-secured puts, not general options strategies or spreads.

Can I connect Composer to my own broker like Interactive Brokers?+

No. Composer is a closed ecosystem: it is itself the brokerage, and strategies can only run in Composer accounts. There is no order routing to third-party brokers and no strategy export to code.

Does Composer have an affiliate program?+

It ran the 'Maestro' program (reported ~$20 per qualified referral requiring an annual Trading Pass purchase, $1,000/yr cap, US-only), but the official terms page went offline after the June 2026 SoFi acquisition, so its current status is unverified. The live consumer referral program pays discounts, not cash: 25% off the Trading Pass per referral, free after four.
