Free backtesting software, and what free actually means
16 of the 20 platforms here advertise something free. Only 5 are free with no paid tier anywhere. The gap between those two numbers is where people lose an afternoon.
The finding
One flag in a comparison table says free, and it covers four different arrangements: open source with nothing to sell you, a permanent free tier of a commercial product, a platform a broker pays for, and a time-boxed trial. They are sorted below rather than counted together.
Read from each platform's first pricing tier rather than from the free flag, because the flag is what makes the table lie. One case fits none of the four and matters most on a page like this: a free plan that does not run backtests at all.
Free with no paid tier at all (5)
Open source. There is no upsell because there is nothing to sell you. You pay in setup time and in data, which these do not include, and you get no support beyond whoever answers on GitHub.

Free because a broker pays for it (2)

Free tier, no backtesting in it (1)

The bill nobody quotes: data
None of the free options include market data worth trusting, and several include none at all. That is the real cost, and it is the one that decides whether the backtest means anything.
A free engine pointed at a free feed inherits everything that feed got wrong: missing bars, unadjusted splits and dividends, and a universe that quietly excludes the companies that went bust. Every one of those errors pushes results in the flattering direction, which is why a free backtest tends to look better than a paid one rather than worse.
Free does not mean less rigorous
Paying more does not buy a more honest number. Across everything assessed here, only 2 of 20 platforms correct a result for how many variants you tried, and the price tag does not predict which. One of the strongest on that axis is an open-source library.
So choose on what the engine does with your data, not on what it costs. The full ranking is ordered on exactly that, and the overfitting page explains why it is the axis that matters.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best free backtesting software?
If free means no paid tier at any point, 5 qualify: NautilusTrader, Zipline Reloaded, Freqtrade, Backtrader, Backtesting.py. All are open-source Python libraries, so they cost you setup time and they do not include market data. If free means usable without paying today, 8 more back a commercial product with a permanent free tier or with broker revenue.
Can you backtest for free without coding?
Yes. Composer, TradingView offer a free tier and need no code. The limits are usually on history depth and on how many strategies or backtests you can run, so check those before building on one.
What do free backtesting tiers usually take away?
Four things, in roughly this order: how far back the data goes, how fine the bars are, how many backtests or strategies you may run, and whether you can export results. The engine is rarely crippled. What is limited is the data and the volume, which is also what decides whether a backtest means anything.
Is free backtesting software good enough to trust?
Price and trustworthiness are unrelated here, and the data says so. Rigour scores among the free options run from 3.3 to 6.8 out of 10, which is roughly the same spread as the paid ones. Paying does not buy you a more honest number.
Do all free tiers let you actually backtest?
No. Trade Ideas has a free plan that states it excludes backtesting, so the feature people came for sits behind a paid tier. Read what the free plan includes, not that a free plan exists.
What does free never include?
Market data of any quality, on any of them. That is the real bill. A free engine with a free data feed is a backtest on whatever that feed happened to record, gaps, adjustments and survivorship included, and those are the errors that flatter results rather than spoil them.
